Fic Recommendations

Fiction by other people who do this stuff way better than me. Many of these writers work in NC-17 ratings; read appropriate warnings. This list will probably grow to massive size as I update from my huge bookmark list. (All outside links.)

Barb C
Thoughtful, strongly plotted, and filled with deep character-study goodness, Barb's BtVS fic are satisfying, novel-length reads. An alternate version of Buffy's resurrection, "A Raising in the Sun" leads into the long story "Necessary Evils," which interweaves various ideas and themes from Seasons 6-7 with different results, and continues on in the current WIP "A Parliament of Monsters." Barb's outtakes, little pieces left on the cutting-room floor, are also terrific fun.

Dutch Buffy 2305
Complex looks at the Buffy/Spike relationship, often by placing the duo out of context through variations in time or place. Razor-sharp characterizations, involving plotting, steamy sex. "Actions Past" is a big favorite of mine, also the wild and crazy "Take Heart."

Europanya
Multilayered, deep, gorgeous. Fantastic characterization, gripping scenarios. Superior angst, and amazing sex. Images that will haunt you. Did I mention amazing sex? Try digging into "Shards" and "A Dying Dream."

Fer1213
Spuffy stories to warm your heart and hurt it simultaneously - nobody, but nobody, covers the empty spaces in between episodes (or even inside them) like Fer. Her Fill-in-the-Blank stories are painful gems, her long stories, even better. I have particular affection for the angsty standalone "Cold" and the AU "What You Wish For."

Harmonyfb
"Glimpses" takes on the roots of Buffy/Spike back in Season 2 and foreshadows later developments, continued in the followup "Revelations"; "Dangerous" gives us a souled Spike who's still a killer. Harmonyfb's work is edgy and intense, gripping reading of the you-never-know-what's-gonna-happen school.

Herself
The reigning queen of Buffy/Spike angst. The continuing "Bittersweets" saga splits off into alternate universe after "Wrecked." Other stories on this site, such as "Disenchantment," "Leather," and "What She Deserves" split off from continuity at other points. All are excellent mixtures of agony, sex, and deep thoughts; to read Herself is to drink a mason jar full of tears. In a good way.

Miss Murchison
There are other good stories here, but it's the Spike/Joyce fic "A Glorious Morning I Have Seen" and its sequel "Present Tense" that really brought me here - an unusual pairing, but absolutely worth reading for sheer uplift value. A story for people who could do without some angst for a bit. Fun, sexy, and in the sequel, with the quality of a madcap mystery/comedy. Very unusual.

Salieri
Buffy and Spike in a variety of agonies, each one exquisite - for superb characterization, fantabulous detail and ohmigod amazing sensual smut, look here. A unique outlook as well - check out "Viewpoint" for a literal new outlook, and for something really different in a post-"Not Fade Away" B/S story, try "Recalled to Life."

Tesla
Delicious, zippy dialogue, completely zany yet somehow perfectly plausible character pairings, and a mad ability to pull off crossovers, human AUs, and other tricky prospects with dizzying ease. Her Anyaworld, an alternate vision of Angel in which Anya comes to work with the L.A. gang, is a joy in every sense, and you'll never see The X-Files or Angel the same way after reading her Vampire Mulder stories. Like reading scripts to shows you wish you could watch.

Yahtzee
"Phoenix Burning" is one of the first long fics based on BtVS I ever read, and still one of the best; far-future AU for a Buffy who never came back after "The Gift." A fabulous, original work.
